Ubuntu Linux - World’s most popular desktop Linux distribution
According to the Distrowatch website, Ubuntu Linux has maintained its position as the world’s most popular desktop Linux distribution as well as being totally free of cost. I have been using the Ubuntu Linux Desktop distribution for almost over 2 years now from it’s very first release and have recommended to all my clients and anyone seeking advice. The best achievements for my record so far has been that a bank is migrating it’s 1000 Desktop network
nodes to Ubuntu with Red Hat Linux RHEL-4 on the backend.
The bank will be using the current Long Term Supported Release version of Ubuntu, that is, Dapper Drake 6.06 that has free community support on the Desktop for over 3 years and 5 years on the server side. There is also another Ubuntu Linux version available in the market under a 6-month release cycle Edgy 6.10 released in October earlier this year. The upcomming Ubuntu Linux release in 2007 is Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn Herd.
Background Information:
Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. “Ubuntu” is an ancient African word, meaning “humanity to others”. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world. The official website of the Ubuntu project is located [here].
