[Phoronix] Fedora v. Ubuntu: A Performance Look
We have compared the 32-bit and 64-bit performance of Ubuntu and started a performance comparison of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, but how does the performance of the upcoming Feisty Fawn release compare to that of Fedora 7? This course is free as in free beer. However, a goodwill contribution in the form of active participation, revisions, suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Basic requirements are a desire to learn, to do reasonable footwork reading the material, googling the topics at times, gathering information on your own system, to respect fellow learners, and to follow netetiquette. This course being more specifically targeted to beginners, there aren’t really that many requirements. However, keep in mind that questions will range from very basic to more advanced. Beginners will have to be bold and ask the questions they have at their level there are no stupid questions and not be intimidated by more advanced questions from more advanced users who are learning too. More advanced users will have to “remember when, as they once were introduced themselves to Linux, and hopefully contribute answers to basic questions as well as more advanced ones.

Saving power with Linux on Intel hardware
PowerTOP is a Linux tool that finds the software component(s) that make your laptop use more power than necessary while it is idle. As of Linux kernel version 2.6.21, the kernel no longer has a fixed 1000Hz timer tick. This will (in theory) give a huge power savings because the CPU stays in low power mode for longer periods of time during system idle.

Learn UNIX in 10 minutes
Learn UNIX in 10 minutes. Version 1.3 Preface This is something that I had given out to students (CAD user training) in years past. The purpose was to have on one page the basics commands for getting started using the UNIX shell (so that they didn’t call me asking what to do the first time someone gave them a tape). This document is copyrighted but freely redistributable under the terms of the GFDL . Have an idea for this page? Send me patches, comments, corrections, about whatever you think is wrong or should be included. I am always happy to hear from you. Please include the word “UNIX” in your subject.
