“Next Big Thing For 2007″ - CIO Study finds Linux ready for Prime-Time!
My earlier predications about Linux for year 2007 [here] seem to be catching on quickly (grinning). It may seem a bit unbelievable but according to thisTechworld news article [here], nearly half of all enterprises will be running mission-critical business applications on Linux in five years’ time. That’s according to survey of IT directors, VPs and CIOs carried out by Saugatuck Research, which questioned 133 businesses worldwide.
The company predicts a steep rise: only 18 percent of businesses will be using Linux in business-critical roles by the end of 2007. “Linux operating systems - and open source-based software in general - have reached critical marketplace mass,” said the study’s authors, Bruce Guptill and Bill McNee of Saugatuck Research. They predicted that the number of companies in “early or full deployment” of mission-critical applications on Linux would grow by 40 percent from 2007-2009, and would then accelerate to grow by 80 percent from 2009-2011. Vendors, service providers and IT execs alike all need to take notice of the trend and reposition themselves to meet it, the researchers claimed.
We are going to see alot of such experiments and results throughout 2007 as companies explore their options to benefit from great savings in software procurement costs, high performance on existing IT hardware infrastructure and more “free” and “open” enterprise solutions!
