All that Asterisk* - Learn it Easy at Nerdvittles!
Asterisk [here] is a complete IP PBX in software created by Mark Spencer of Digium, Inc in 1999. Asterisk runs on a wide variety of operating systems including Linux, Mac OS X, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and Sun Solaris providing all the features of a PBX advanced features of high end/cost proprietary PBXs. It supports Voice over IP and is interoperable with almost all standards-based telephony equipment and the best part of it, it uses relatively inexpensive hardware.
Asterisk is available as FOSS under the GNU General Public License (GPL) thus is available for download free of charge being a very popular FOSS bsaed VOIP communications platform supported by a very huge and active Asterisk Community that contributes code, testing and bug-patches.
Learning Asterisk can sometimes be very overwhelming, that is really what I felt but a very good friend of mine, Francis Boon (working with Oxfam GB) shared with me an interesting and comprehensive website about learning to deploy Asterisk solutions relatively easily called Nerd Vittles [here]. Indeed the website has simple but detailed information on deploying small to large scale Asterisk based VOIP Telephony Solutions. Give it a try and share your comments with us here at TuxWatch.com!
